GTA V makes $1 billion in 3 days, becomes first “entertainment property” to do so

To say Grand Theft Auto V is a success would be a massive understatement. Rockstar’s latest crime simulator open world adventure title already shattered records on Tuesday, but today Take Two has announced that the game has raked in $1 billion worldwide in just 3 days — becoming the first “entertainment property” (including feature films and videogames) to accomplish such a feat. To put this in perspective, the previous record-holder was Call of Duty: Black Ops II which also reached $1 billion but after 15 days.

Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two, commented:

Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment. We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.

This kind of revenue is clearly a massive milestone for the industry. With the biggest blockbuster’s earning only half of this at best no doubt Hollywood will take serious notice. Hopefully this means we’ll finally get those Halo and Bioshock movies!

Quite an impressive feat considering the visual problems it’s had since launch.
