Atari announces Alone in the Dark and Haunted House reboots

Atari are pretty much single handedly responsible for my gaming addiction. There, I’ve said it. I’m an addict and it’s primarily their fault. When I first started gaming Atari was THE name in video gaming, and I remember spending hours playing Xenophobe on my old Atari Lynx. However the game that really launched them into the forefront of game developers was the classic Alone in the Dark. It was one of the first truly scary games I ever played (The 7th Guest doesn’t count) and made you rely far more on your wits than on your reactions.

With this in mind I am extremely excited, and somewhat nervous, about the announced reboot for PC. I would love to relive the game in all it’s glory, with amazing graphics and updated gameplay mechanics. But at the same time I’m a little bit worried, as we always are when one of our beloved classics gets the reboot treatment. I’m worried that it will become a game of quicktime events with no real heart, and that would make 12 year old me a very sad little lad indeed. My worry is compounded by the rather lacklustre attempt at a sequel that was made in 2008, with Alone in the Dark being released as a sequel of sorts. It wasn’t great. It wasn’t awful either, but I honestly feel that another poor showing from an AITD game will be the death knell for the series.
Atari have left a tantalising teaser on the official AITD.com webpage, allowing you to sign up for more information.
Are you a fan of the original game, or of the recent sequel? Let me know in the comments below, how do you feel about the proposed AITD Reboot?

Atari have also announced a number of reboots for the mobile gaming market, including Rollercoaster Tycoon and Haunted House. Both look like good fun games to spend your lunch break tapping away at, and if you’ve ever played Rollercoaster Tycoon then you know there’s a lot of fun to be had with incomplete rollercoaster tracks…. no judgement here!
Haunted House is another classic game from the misty annals of history, although again an attempt was made at a sequel in 2010.

All of the above mentioned games will be demonstrated at PAX Prime in Seattle from the 29th – 31st August. Along with more information about Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 for PC, which Atari has been extremely guarded about since it’s announcement in March this year.
