Exo Zombies DLC map ‘Infection’ will have ‘mini boss’ and more info revealed

In an interview with VG247, High Moon Studios have revealed some new interesting details about what we can expect in the upcoming Zombies DLC.

The second DLC pack for Advanced Warfare, Ascendance, is released on Xbox next week and High Moon Studios are the development team focussing purely on the new Exo Zombies map, Infection. According to the team’s studio head, Matt Tieger, for them, it’s Zombies “all of the time” and working on the new map has allowed them to add some new elements to what was included in the new mode when it launched with the first DLC pack in January.

One of the new features included in Infection is a ‘mini boss’, an introduction which will require players to work more cooperatively. At around the tenth wave, this boss character, who is equipped with a riot shield and hammer, will appear in the map. If players split up rather than attacking the boss together, then he will be much more difficult to overcome.

Another new element mentioned is that certain parts of the map will become out of bounds during certain periods. For instance, during high rounds, parts of the map will become ‘toxic’, requiring players to navigate to a different area. The higher the wave, different areas will become out of bounds and sometimes multiple areas will be closed at one time.

Last of all, civilian characters will sometimes appear in the map. When they do, players have the option to escort the civilians to an evacuation zone where a helicopter comes to take them to safety. If players choose to do this, then they will receive a free weapon upgrade in return. If they don’t, however, all of the buy stations in the map will be disabled for a short period of time.

“This was our first chance to run with this. There’s a couple of key areas where we’ve added some new pieces to what was already working. It’s all zombies, all of the time. This was our first chance to run with this. There’s a couple of key areas where we’ve added some new pieces to what was already working.

“We added what most of our focus testers are referring to a mini boss. Around wave ten there’s a big guy with a riot shield and hammer. He changes the co-op play style. In Exo Zombies often players split apart and take the threats between the four of them. If you do that with this guy you’re going to have a hard time. He’s really a 4 vs 1 strategy. It requires focused fire.

“We’ve taken the next step with the infection mechanic. When you get to the higher waves full zones become toxic for the round. It closes off the map. That goes away after the round but then new areas are closed off or multiple areas are closed off as you get higher and higher.

“We added civilians that appear somewhere in the map and you need to escort them to the evac zone for the helicopter to come and pick them up. Now you can imagine you’re trying to survive but you have someone else to deal with and that makes for some interesting choices. If you do it you get a nice bump, a free weapon upgrade. If you fail to do it or chose not to we shut down all the buy stations for a short period of time. That might not seem so bad but when you desperately need ammo for 30 seconds it’s debilitating. That’s also changed the co-op play pattern. – Matt Tieger, High Moon Studios studio head

Ascendance will be released first on Xbox One and 360 this Tuesday. The DLC pack will contain four new multiplayer maps, a new Exo Zombies level, a new multiplayer weapon, and a new multiplayer Exo Ability. Fans tuning into the finals of the Call of Duty Championship 2015 on Sunday will be treated with exclusive multiplayer gameplay and a new Exo Zombies trailer.
