Rock Band 4 announced, coming to Xbox One & PS4 this year

Five years after the last title, Harmonix have announced that they’re working on another game in the Rock Band franchise: Rock Band 4!

The developers have teamed up with Mad Catz and will be bringing the game to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this year. Attendees of PAX East this weekend will be able to pre-order an exclusive Penny Arcade-themed guitar at Harmonix’s booth (#4224).

In bringing the series to a new generation of consoles, Harmonix promises that the game will deliver features and gameplay that fans love, as well as expanding the franchise through innovative ways. Rock Band 4 will support more than 2000 tracks released since the franchise’s first title in 2007, and at no additional charge players who’ve purchased or downloaded tracks on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will be able to download them again on the new systems for Rock Band 4. To celebrate today’s announcement, a free downloadable track, “I Still Believe” by Frank Turner, is currently available on Rock Band 3 and Rock Band Blitz for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The song will also be one of hundreds available when Rock Band 4 is launched sometime this year.

More details are set to be revealed in May and the game will be released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year.

“With Rock Band 4, we’re doubling down on the energy and excitement of playing music live with your friends. Focusing on the core experience that our fans have told us they love allows us to evolve established gameplay in meaningful ways that we can’t wait to share with everyone later this year.” – Steve Janiak, Harmonix Chief Executive Officer

“We couldn’t be happier to be working with Harmonix and help bring the band back together for the launch of Rock Band 4. Harmonix possesses unrivalled passion and vision for music gaming and we can’t wait to introduce the next generation music platform to passionate gamers.” Darren Richardson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz

“Since the beginning, we’ve called Rock Band a music platform. Players responded by downloading hundreds of their favorite tracks, and building a massive library of playable music. It’s important for us to respect those purchases and enable our fans to bring that content over to the Rock Band platform on new generation consoles.” – Daniel Sussman, Rock Band 4 Product Manager
