Xbox Support hints at new Xbox One controller with a 3.5mm headset port

When the Xbox One launched a year and a half ago, the controller it shipped with didn’t include a built-in 3.5mm port for devices like headsets, to the dismay of many. Instead, the controller features a proprietary port, meaning than it supports specifically-built devices rather than a standard make. At launch, this rendered many existing devices such as Astro A40 headsets as useless due to there being no method of connecting the devices to the controller. Not long after launch, Microsoft eventually released a headset adapter as an additional purchase, but this can still be quite an inconvenience.

Today, users on NeoGaf have noticed that the Xbox Support page for the controller had been updated (it has since been reverted back to its original state). On the page, the layout of the controller had changed with the most noticeable difference being that of the port. Whereas it had previously been specified as an ‘expansion port’, the latest update labelled it as a 3.5mm port for compatible audio devices. It also stated that this revision applies only to controllers released after June 2015. It’s unclear whether any other additions and improvements are included, but we imagine they won’t want to make newer controllers more advantageous gameplay-wise compared to older models.

On top of this, yesterday Xbox France tweeted a picture of an Xbox One controller clearly being worked on by some miniature characters. The tweet was accompanied by the words ‘We are quietly preparing’ and an Xbox E3 hashtag.

It certainly seems like Microsoft are set to ditch their proprietary port in favour of a standard 3.5mm one. Given that it seems to be a standard update for all controllers after June, we imagine an announcement will come around E3 time with a launch not far after.
